What is mechatronics?
Mechatronics is the application of electronics and mechanics to create a system. It is an interdisciplinary field that combines mechanical engineering with electronics or electrical engineering, biomedical engineering (e.g., biophysics), computer science, control theory, statistics, and operations research. This can be anything from a simple robot to an entire automobile. Mechatronics is a broad term that encompasses many different areas of study, which is why people often confuse mechatronics with mechanical engineering or robotics.
The goal of mechatronics is to design complex systems that require interdisciplinary and multi-scale knowledge from both fields.
Mechatronics uses advanced computer programming and software to design robots, drones and other objects that perform tasks using sensors, computers, batteries and motors. The field also includes robotics research and development projects.
Best career options in mechatronics
- Automotive Engineer
An automotive engineer is a highly trained professional who designs and maintains machines, vehicles, and systems within the automotive industry. Their job requires a strong understanding of chemistry and physics as well as mechanical engineering, as well as an ability to work on complex projects under tight deadlines and environments.
- Control System Engineer
Control system engineers are responsible for designing, developing and maintaining complex control systems used in a variety of industries. These include industrial automation (e.g., manufacturing), aerospace, defence, transportation (e.g., automobiles), utilities and medical devices. They also design software that makes it easier for engineers to control large devices or machines via computer networks or other types of communications systems.
- Data Logging Engineer
Data logging is the process of recording data regularly. The data can be recorded in various formats and is used to track and analyse the performance of machines or equipment, such as sensors, pumps, and engines. Data logging engineers are responsible for acquiring data from devices and storing it in a database or software program. These engineers also write scripts that allow them to analyse data collected over time using statistical analysis tools.

- Instrumentation Engineer
Instrumentation engineers work with industrial machinery to install and maintain instrumentation equipment that measures physical quantities, such as temperature, pressure, flow rate and level of chemicals in liquid or gas form. They also design and build custom instruments for specific applications by modifying existing designs according to individual needs.
- Project Engineer
A project engineer is a person who is responsible for supervising the work of the design engineer, development and manufacturing of a product. They oversee all activities related to the project. They check that the team meets all the standards, help determine the budget, and ensure that all deadlines are met.
- Service Engineer
A service engineer is an expert in one or more fields of engineering or technical work which provides services to customers or clients on behalf of others by maintaining or repairing products or equipment. A service engineer may be employed by an employer directly on its account or through subcontracting arrangements with other companies, organisations or individuals.
