Since the very start of the world of cinema, cars have played pivotal roles in movies and the stories they tell. Whether it’s a lean mean supercar like the Batmobile, or a rather clunky Ectomobile built from a Cadillac Miller-Meteor, they contribute in spades to every film to a point where they often take on a role of their own. Here are a few of the most recognizable cars from film and cinema.

The DeLorean DMC-12
A product straight from the mind of legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, the DeLorean DMC-12 is perhaps arguably the most recognizable car from the movies ever. It was used as the time machine from the 3-part Back to the Future movie franchise and anyone who has seen the movies will recall it quite vividly. It was the perfect car for its role in the movies thanks to its futuristic looks and iconic gull-wing doors, but it wasn’t a commercial successful car at all. It was by all accounts a flop in the car market of the 80s but despite that, it has a real cult following and fanbase thanks to its use as a time-traveling automobile.
The Maserati Spyder
In 2006, the James Bond movie Casino Royale actually featured two cars from this iconic sports car maker. Neither the 2004 Maserati Coupe nor the 2002 Maserati Spider were at the hands of 007 during the running time of the film, but they were nevertheless very capable co-stars. In true Bond film style, they’re put through the ringer and in dire need of a good service by the time the credits roll. The Ford Explorer
While this car doesn’t exactly feature because of a massive engine or impressive speed, it does play a rather pivotal role in Jurassic Park. To be specific, it’s the 1992 Ford Explorer XLT that is used as the autonomous tourist vehicles that take visitors to the dinosaur park around to all the different enclosures. A large part of the movie takes place in and around these rather ordinary cars, so we had to include them on our list.
The Dodge Charger
We might be on the 10th iteration of the Fast and the Furious films, but no car featured in any of the films to date had quite the same impact as the 1970 Dodge Charger featured in the very first film, Fast and the Furious. It’s not until the last big action scene in the movie do we see the car in action, sporting an enormous supercharger poking from the hood before it launches into a very dramatic wheelstand. It’s one of the newer film roles the car has played, but it’s not the only one. The car also features in The Dukes of Hazzard as the General Lee, making it one of film’s most iconic cars.
There are plenty more examples of cars that have been iconic to the films they’ve featured in, and everyone has their favorite movie car!
